Wastewater sampling: a population-level view

Wastewater sampling is a non-invasive, privacy-preserving tool designed to provide earlier insight into what is circulating in a community.

What it is

Wastewater sampling looks for pathogens and other biological signals in sewage and environmental wastewater samples. By monitoring environments rather than individuals, we can take the biological pulse of an entire community in a single sample, without relying on costly individual testing.

No individual testing required, and no personal or identifiable data collected.

Why it matters

One sample speaks for a whole sewershed, which gives a broader, population-level view of pathogen trends than clinical reporting can reach on its own.

Non-invasive

Supporting situational awareness without disrupting daily activities or operations.

Privacy-preserving

Pathogen detection without individual testing. Only aggregated, deidentified data is collected.

Cost-effective

Uses existing wastewater infrastructure, so it requires no capital investment or additional facility construction.

How it works

Composite wastewater samples are collected from treatment plants or targeted sewersheds. The samples are sent to our labs for sequencing, and results are shared through our dashboards.

  1. Receive starter kit

Your starter kit arrives with all the supplies and instructions needed to collect, store and ship samples.

  2. Collect your sample

Collect a 150 mL pour-off from your routine composite raw influent sample.

  3. Ship your sample

Ship your sample to our labs using the provided supplies. We cover all shipping costs and logistics.

  4. Analyze and interpret

Using both targeted testing and metagenomic sequencing, we identify the biological signals present in the sample.

  5. Review data

Access your results through reports and dashboards that help you understand findings, monitor trends and make informed decisions.

Detection capabilities

Lungfish uses metagenomic sequencing to identify a broad range of pathogens, so the same sample can answer questions about known threats and about ones nobody thought to look for.

Coverage beyond clinical systems

Captures viral shedding from asymptomatic individuals, home-test users, and populations that do not seek or cannot access clinical care.

Practical intelligence for preparedness

Complements clinical, laboratory and syndromic reporting with an early signal that helps direct outreach, provider alerts and healthcare preparedness.

No-surprise data governance

Results are delivered through a private, password-protected dashboard and only published based on pre-agreed protocols.

Results and data

Sampling results are made available through private reporting tools and interactive dashboards. Partners can track pathogen activity, monitor trends over time, and compare signals across locations.
