Air sampling: an early detection system

Lungfish uses air sampling to identify pathogens circulating in shared indoor environments. The approach is non-invasive, privacy-preserving, and designed to provide timely insights.

What it is

Air sampling captures genetic material present in the air and analyzes it for pathogens of interest. Instead of testing individuals, it monitors shared environments to understand what may be circulating within a space.

No individual testing required, and no personal or identifiable data collected.

Why it matters

Respiratory viruses spread through the air often before symptoms appear, which makes clinical data a lagging indicator. Air sampling gives earlier signals for better decisions.

Non-invasive

Supporting situational awareness without disrupting daily activities or operations.

Privacy-preserving

Pathogen detection without individual testing. Only aggregated, deidentified data is collected.

Flexible monitoring

We employ a range of testing methods, from targeted testing to sequencing, depending on the site's needs.

How it works

A small sampling device continuously pulls air through a filter that captures genetic material. Samples are analyzed and results are shared through reporting tools and dashboards.

  1. Receive starter kit

Your starter kit arrives with all the supplies and instructions needed to collect, store and ship your samples.

  2. Collect your sample

Set up the provided air sampling device in your indoor space and collect your ambient air sample.

  3. Ship your sample

Ship your sample to our labs using the provided supplies. We cover all shipping costs and logistics.

  4. Analyze and interpret

Using both targeted testing and metagenomic sequencing, we identify the pathogens present in the sample.

  5. Review data

Access your results through reports and dashboards that help you understand findings, monitor trends and make informed decisions.

Detection capabilities

Lungfish uses both targeted testing and metagenomic sequencing, so the same sample can answer questions about known pathogens and about threats nobody thought to look for.

Coverage beyond clinical systems

Captures viral shedding from asymptomatic individuals, home-test users, and populations that do not seek or cannot access clinical care.

Practical intelligence for preparedness

Complements clinical, laboratory and syndromic reporting with an early signal that helps direct outreach, provider alerts and healthcare preparedness.

No-surprise data governance

Results are delivered through a private, password-protected dashboard and only published based on pre-agreed protocols.

Results and data

Sampling results are made available through reporting tools and interactive dashboards. Partners can track pathogen activity, monitor trends over time, and compare signals across locations.
