Environmental Air Sampling across the Inkfish fleet

Airing a New Perspective on Health at Sea

Inkfish takes a data-driven approach to improving life and operations across our fleet, whether it's enhancing the experience aboard our yachts or keeping our remote marine research expeditions going smoothly. Our vessels already monitor engines, water and weather. Now we monitor the air, too.

Turning the invisible into insight: Lungfish™ uses small, quiet air samplers to detect pathogens that may be circulating onboard without testing individuals or disrupting daily operations.

What we've seen across our fleet

Our vessels move between very different environments. Shipyards are busy, open environments with large, changing workforces; onboard, we implement airborne pathogen mitigation protocols designed to reduce the introduction and spread of respiratory illness.

Air sampling lets us see the difference. Across SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, influenza B and RSV targets, we detected substantially fewer positive samples aboard our vessels than in the shipyards.

For us, that's the value of making the invisible measurable: knowing what's circulating around us to inform our actions, while generating real-world evidence about how well our systems are working.

How do you know if your systems actually work?

Environmental intelligence for smarter vessels

Small, quiet devices run unobtrusively in the background, capturing air samples which are then analyzed for genetic traces of pathogens. This data gives us a new layer of information about whether our air cleaning systems are actually doing their job.

Early warning, operational continuity

Respiratory illness can quickly disrupt life onboard for crew and guests. Because pathogens are shed into the air even before people show symptoms, air sampling can catch them early and let our team know when to step up ventilation, filtration and other precautions. This allows us to break infection chains and efficiently allocate resources.

Private by design, minimal by nature

No swabs, no invasive testing — Lungfish monitors the shared environment, not the individual. With a few minutes of crew time per sample, it supports daily operations without getting in the way. Lungfish provides Air Sampling Starter Kits with all the necessary equipment and supplies, and handles all the shipping. For more on how the process works, visit our Air Sampling page.

From data to decisions

Each vessel follows its results through a personalized dashboard, with automated reporting that helps us understand what we're seeing, how it's changing, and when action may be useful.

If we find something, what can we do?

A positive air sample is an early signal to investigate and act, without identifying or testing an individual.

  • Cleaning the air: Increase fresh-air ventilation, check and/or upgrade air filtration via HVAC systems or by deploying portable HEPA filters, ensuring you achieve a suitable number of air changes per hour (ACH) for your space - a minimum of 6 ACH is usually recommended.
  • Reduce transmission: encourage crew and guests to report symptoms early, use masks temporarily in shared indoor spaces, reduce crowding and separate symptomatic people.
  • Test strategically: offer targeted clinical testing when appropriate, rather than testing everyone routinely.
  • Escalate when needed: unusual or higher-risk pathogen signals can trigger review by the onboard medical team and pathogen-specific precautions.
At 6 air changes per hour, it takes about 46 minutes to remove 99% of airborne contaminants after the source is gone. At 12 ACH, that falls to about 23 minutes.
Air matters
  1. Detect

Air sampling identifies a pathogen signal.

  2. Act

Increase clean air, introduce targeted precautions and assess crew and guests where appropriate.

  3. Check

Resample to see whether the signal falls and whether the intervention is working.
